At 11 am on Friday 14th September there was three minutes silence, throughout Europe, as a mark of respect for the casualties of the terrorist attacks in the USA. It made me think of what I and millions like me do for twenty minutes every day. For many people, standing or sitting quietly for three minutes can be a challenge. Just what do I think about? What do I look at? Why is my mind thinking about trivial things? Even in churches, when silence is sometimes requested of us, most churches are uncomfortable with it because it gives congregations an opportunity for their minds to wander. Yet I and several million people like me spend twenty minutes in the morning and evening, every day, in silence, deliberately. Why? We are practising Transcendental Meditation as taught by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Transcendental Meditation, or TM for short, is an enjoyable, simple, effortless mental technique which allows the mind and body to settle down to a deep state of rest while still remaining alert. There is a lot of research (published in learned journals worldwide, recent example here) showing that it is tremendously good for the individual's health, wealth and happiness, for society and for the world at large. You can look at it from a personal point of view. It brings deep rest and inner fulfillment which gradually changes the way ones nervous system functions and enables that deep inner fulfillment to remain with one all day long. You can look at it from the point of view of consciousness. Pure consciousness sees an active, perhaps even agitated, mind gradually settling down to its own home, the field of pure consciousness, its Self. As it does so, dipping into that state of deep inner peace, the field of universal pure consciousness is stimulated. It brings fulfilment and coherence to its surroundings, including other people. If one percent of the population of an area do this the whole area is affected. Negative trends in society begin to fall away. Crime rate, accident rate fall. Many hundreds of thousands of people around the world also practise the advanced TM-Sidhi techniques including Yogic Flying. Over forty published studies have shown these to be much more powerful than the regular TM technique. In fact all that is needed is the square root of 1% of the population. In experiments where this number has been reached for the whole world, 7,000 at that time, there was evidence of reduced international conflicts and terrorism. In experiments where this number has been reached for states or counties the same effect is shown again and again. Don't take my word for it - read the published studies. Get copies from your public libraries, around the world, and ask your politicians if they have any comparable evidence for the success of their approaches to crime and conflict. Top
