Evidence based solutions

Throughout this site I talk about solutions to terrorism and violence. These solutions have a substantial body of evidence supporting their effectiveness. This evidence is not in the form of anecdotes or theories but it is in more than 500 scientific studies that have been performed in over 200 independent universities, hospitals and research institutions in 33 countries around the world during the last thirty years.

These experiments have been published in 100 leading, learned, peer-reviewed, scientific journals.

For the newcomer to the idea that Transcendental Meditation can have as many far reaching effects as claimed - the published research should perhaps be thought of in four different ways. This table shows what I mean. The bottom right corner (shaded) is the one that most closely addresses the issues of terrorism:

Are there measurable good effects on the individual? Are there measurable good effects on others or society at large?
During the practise of TM by an individual or group Yes - see here for just one example Yes - see here for just one example
After the practise of TM by an individual or group i.e. in the 23 or so hours that the individual is not practising TM Yes - see here for an example Yes - see here for a list

Of course there are other ways of categorising the research - such as dividing the studies into psychological, physiological, sociological and environmental and any comprehensive review such as the one here will show that.

With particular reference to the prevention of terrorism you should read the discussion and research here.

Footnotes

To get a scientific experiment published in a peer reviewed learned journal is very difficult. It gives the experiment and its result great credence. See here for one researcher's story of getting that done (David Orme-Johnson, Ph.D). Some of the scientific journals which have published research on the beneficial effects of Transcendental Meditation include American Journal of Cardiology, Hypertension, Stroke, Science, Respiration, American Journal of Physiology, Scientific American, American Journal of Psychiatry, Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, American Journal of Managed Care, Journal of the Canadian Medical Association, Japanese Journal of Industrial Health, Japanese Journal of Public Health, Harefuah (Journal of the Israel Medical Association), Journal of the Association of Physicians of India, New Zealand Family Physician, Journal of Behavioral Medicine, Psychosomatic Medicine, Journal of Applied Physiology, International Journal of the Addictions, Alcoholism Treatment Quarterly, Biochemical Archives, International Journal of Neuroscience, Electroencephalography and Clinical Neurophysiology, Experimental Neurology, Complementary Medicine International, Nutrition Research, European Journal of Pharmacology, Neuropharmacology, Physiology and Behavior, Hormones and Behavior, Pharmacology, Biochemistry and Behavior, Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, Federation of American Societies of Experimental Biology Journal, Homeostasis in Health and Disease, Journal of Human Stress, American Psychologist, Journal of Clinical Psychology, The Journal of Psychology, British Journal of Psychology, British Journal of Educational Psychology, Education, The Journal of Mind and Behavior, The Journal of Counseling Psychology, Psychology Crime and Law, and Social Indicators Research.
